The development of effective exploitation strategies requires scientifically sound characterization of geothermal reservoirs. Surface geophysical data are potentially the most powerful and cost effective means of exploration and characterization, providing images of the subsurface structures prior to extensive drilling.

Laboratory Systems

New England Research, Inc.NER offers a range of laboratory systems to measure rock properties. The AutoLab series supports static and dynamic elastic, complex electrical, and flow and transport properties measured at in situ conditions. The AutoScan system collects detailed data maps of dynamic elastic, complex electrical, flow and transport, and geochemical properties on slabbed core and large rock and soil surfaces with a resolution as small as 1.0 mm. In addition to the standard features and options discussed here, NER offers extensive customization services on each product, including custom coreholders, testing equipment, and control/acquisition software.

NER systems are the result of years of experience making rock properties measurements at reservoir conditions. Progressive improvements in the hardware and contol/acquisition software are incorporated into the design of each unit. Since each product we offer is used at NER, qualified technical support is constantly available.

The AutoLab series [more information]
AutoLab systems provide integrated measurement, analysis, and reporting of ultrasonic velocities, permeability, resistivity, pore volume compressibility, and deformation over a range of physical conditions: fluid pore pressures to15,000 psi (100 MPa), confining pressures to 30,000 psi (200 MPa), and temperatures to 250° F (121° C). All units are supplied with a custom software system which is capable of acquiring data and controlling experiments on AutoLab 1000, 1500, and 2000 systems.

AutoScan [more information]
A state-of-the-art laboratory core scanner that allows for high-resolution, spatially coupled, point-focus scanning of core or tabletop rock and soil samples for gas permeability, resistivity, and ultrasonic compressional- and shear-wave velocities. This unique system has been designed for the characterization of heterogeneities at scales that are currently most difficult to quantify from log and core analysis and that are required for upscaling laboratory physical properties measurements to site and field scale applications.

The AutoScan system includes dedicated electronic modules for data acquisition, system control software, and our proprietary DataMiner software for data processing and analysis.

TinyPerm [more information]
A unique hand-held device that can characterize the permeability of rocks and soils or the effective hydraulic aperture of fractures in situ permeability measurement capability ranges from 0.01 to 10 darcies for matrices and 10 micron to 2 millimeter fracture apertures.
