The development of effective exploitation strategies requires scientifically sound characterization of geothermal reservoirs. Surface geophysical data are potentially the most powerful and cost effective means of exploration and characterization, providing images of the subsurface structures prior to extensive drilling.

AutoScan

AutoScan [download pdf brochure]
NER has developed the AutoScan core scanner system that allows the user to collect spatially integrated measurements of gas permeability, complex electrical impedance, and ultrasonic compressional and shear velocities on slabbed core and large rock surfaces with 1 mm resolution. The AutoScan system emphasizes characterization of heterogeneity at scales which are currently most difficult to quantify from log and core analysis and which are necessary for upscaling applications.

Example applications of the AutoScan include:

  • Rapid core screening for plug selection
  • Calibration and interpretation of well logs
  • Quick determination of relationships among petrophysical properties
  • Improved coupling of well-logs and petrology
  • Improved interpretation of CT and MRI data
  • Determination of flow and transport parameters for quantitative predictive modeling
  • Development of realistic capillary and relative permeability models
  • Characterization of first order distribution of mineralogical and geochemical heterogeneities
